AR,I am with you as I prefer the 71'-72' style,Jerry's voice and just the sound and style of the band make it feel right, but a strong argument could be made that 5/9/77 is the quintessential version in that it is just absolutely beautiful, with the blend of Donna and Jerry's voices and Keith's haunting piano with Jerry's guitar, just make for a stunning rendition.Another point to be made about the earlier versions is the different lyrics,in a way they really change the dynamic of the song for me and I am really torn as to which way I prefer it,I find "when the words come out like an angry stream, you can hear yourself say things you could never mean" and "you gotta lot words you got to stand behind" to be strong lyrical statements and I could never quite sort a preference.
